A person who has been running consistently for ten years is excellent at running.
Put them in a situation requiring lateral agility, rotational coordination, or dynamic balance — and something unfamiliar happens. Not weakness. Just a sense that the body doesn’t quite know how to organise itself for what is being asked. Movement that used to be instinctive requires conscious effort.
A 2023 study in Cells documented the neurological mechanism directly: the motor cortex loses functional capacity in movement patterns that go unpractised, with measurable reduction in the neural efficiency and responsiveness of those pathways. What Reverses It.
Reversal requires novel, varied, rhythmically complex movement that asks the nervous system to actively figure out new patterns rather than execute ones it already knows automatically.
